The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that mixed media paintings by local artist, Robert B. Reed, and oil paintings by Montgomery, Alabama, based artist, MaryAnn H. Goodhue, will be on exhibit at the North Charleston City Gallery throughout the month of August.

The artists will host a free public reception at the gallery on
Thursday, August 1, from 5pm-7pm.

Concurrent solo exhibitions.
Robert B. Reed will display mixed media paintings related to seaside culture and modes of human leisure in his exhibit Outlying Shores: Annotations From Abroad. MaryAnn H. Goodhue will present
Endangered, featuring oil paintings inspired by the devastating events involving native birds in her home state of Alabama.

About the gallery
The North Charleston City Gallery features two-dimensional works by international, national, and local artists in a variety of subjects and mediums. Exhibits are rotated on a monthly basis and may feature two or more artists concurrently. In addition to monthly exhibits, the gallery also hosts a collection of prints, notecards, jewelry, and gift items by local artists, which are available for sale. The gallery is staffed on Friday, Saturday, and Monday only. Inquiries regarding artists or purchase information may be directed to the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department at (843) 740-5854. 2013/14 DINNER THEATRE SEASON TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Dinner Theatre performances are presented in the Chas. Area Convention Center Ballroom at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston. Check-in and cash-only bar opens in the lobby at 6:30pm. The ballroom doors open at 7:00pm and dinner is served at 7:15pm. The play begins at around 8:00pm. Table numbers are assigned for each play and given to patrons at check-in. Menus include an entrée, house salad, chef’s selection of vegetable & starch, rolls & butter, dessert, iced tea & coffee service. Chef’s choice vegetarian alternative available upon advance request.

Ticket price includes dinner, play, and gratuity. Parking is free. Group discounts available. Cash, check (made payable to the City of North Charleston), Visa, Mastercard, and AmEx accepted. No refunds.

FALL DECOR FOR A CAUSE

AUTUMN WREATHS IN THE OLDE VILLAGE

The Olde North Charleston Merchants Association and the Cultural Arts Dept. are collaborating to decorate the Olde Village section of East Montague Ave. with decorative grapevine wreaths for Fall. Schools, churches, community groups, businesses, and individuals are invited to sponsor a 24″ wreath with two-sided orange ribbon for $25 and personalize it with decorations of their choosing -OR- sponsor a pre-decorated wreath for $50. Past participants have the option of decorating last year’s wreath for $15.
Wreaths with sponsor name will be displayed on light poles lining the Olde Village throughout October and November.

Proceeds from wreath sponsorships will go toward the City of North Charleston’s Christmas charity benefiting needy families.

Wreath sponsorship requests should be made
by 5:00pm on Friday, September 20. Wreaths should be decorated and ready to hang by Tuesday, October 1.

National Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition
The eighth annual National Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition opens this month at the stunning North Charleston Riverfront Park. The eleven month exhibition features nine established and emerging artists displaying imaginative and thought provoking large-scale sculpture. Visitors can enjoy the sculpture displays among ten acres of walking paths, a fishing pier, boardwalk, an oversized sandbox and children’s play area. Images, awards, and artists’ statements can be seen on the exhibit’s section of our website.

North Charleston Farmers Market Concerts
The Farmers Market takes place every Thursday through October 31. The market offers an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce, and features art & craft booths, food vendors, and entertainment. Enjoy live music every 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Thursday. Michael Wolk will perform jazz on August 1. Tom Bomb will present roots rock on August 15. Maya Morrill will be singing bluesy folk originals on August 22. The August 29 market will feature Lowcountry blues by Shrimp City Slim.

WORKSHOPS, CLASSES & CAMPS

Class: Watercolor Painting

This course is designed to introduce students 18 and older to the use of watercolor by direct exposure to the properties and methods of the challenging medium. This is an ideal course for architects, for those wanting to reinforce their observation skills, or for those who just wish to bolster their rendering capabilities. For the more advanced, there will be discussions and projects designed to increase individual progress. Closely followed by the instructor, Robert B. Reed, lessons will be limited to a comfortable number of pupils set in a fun filled environment. Students must bring their own materials. Please call for a supply list.
Fee: $130 for four workshops, 2 ½ hours each.

Creative Arts Workshop w/ Natasha Lawrence
Calligraphy workshop for adults with Natasha Lawrence. Participants will learn the fundamental techniques of calligraphy in the classic Italian Italics lettering style to address wedding invitations or greeting cards, write in journals, make gift tags, or for personal correspondence. Materials are provided.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES

North Charleston Artist Guild: Regular meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 6pm. The August meeting will take place at Mixson Market (4338 McCarthy Street, North Charleston) and will follow a “member review” format. Guild members and prospective members are invited to this casual gathering to discuss art, share current projects, network, and build community. Artists are encouraged to bring recently completed pieces or pieces in progress. Food and beverages are available for sale. For more information, visit northcharlestonartistguild.org.

North Charleston 4th of July Festival

There is plenty of parking in all outer lots and we have the shuttles running starting at 4:30-5:00 throughout the day and evening. Please invite all your friends and neighbors. The lineup for the entertainment begins at 3 with The Calvin Taylor Band, Island Trio, Plane Jane, Blue Dogs featuring Skylar Laine and finale played to the fireworks is the North Charleston Pops.
