Inaugural North Charleston Harvest Festival & Block Party Set for October 26

Seasonal celebration features free fun for the whole family

 

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC –The City of North Charleston announces the inaugural Harvest Festival and Block Party featuring live musical performances, art exhibits, and children activities.  The fall festivities will take place in the Olde Village of North Charleston, located on East Montague Avenue near Park Circle, on Saturday, October 26, 2013, from 6:00-10:00pm. Admission and parking are free. East Montague Avenue will close to vehicular traffic from Jenkins Avenue to Virginia Avenue at 4:00pm and remain closed for the duration of the event.

 

The celebration features music by The Local Honeys and performances by other local arts groups from 6:00-7:30pm; a Kid’s Zone with ghost stories by the Backporch Storytellers, a student art exhibit, craft activities, carnival games, face painting and inflatables from 6:00-8:00pm; a street market showcasing fine art and crafts by members of the North Charleston Artist Guild from 6:00-9:00pm; and a street dance with festive tunes by The V-Tones from 8:00-10:00pm. Many of the restaurants in the Olde Village will offer additional programming and food and drink specials.

 

Other highlights include costume contests for children, adults, and pets with prizes in several categories. The contests for children and adults are free to enter and prizes will be provided by the City of North Charleston and the Olde North Charleston Merchants Association. The pet costume contest, sponsored by The Flats at Mixson, carries a $5 entry fee. Proceeds benefit the Charleston Animal Society, who will be on hand with pets available for adoption. Participants for all contests should be prepared to line up for judging at 7:30pm.

Autumn is just around the corner and the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is gearing up to give back with two special seasonal programs. Join us!
Autumn Street Decor
The Olde North Charleston Merchants Association and City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department are collaborating once again to decorate the Olde Village section of East Montague Avenue with decorative grapevine wreaths for Fall.

Get involved – sponsor a wreath to benefit charity!

Schools, community groups, churches, businesses and individuals are invited to sponsor a 24″ grapevine wreath with two sided orange ribbon for $25 and personalize it with decorations of their choosing -OR- sponsor a pre-decorated wreath with fall foliage for $50. Past participants have the option of decorating last year’s wreath for $15.

Proceeds from wreath sponsorships will go toward the City of North Charleston’s Christmas charity benefiting needy families.

Wreaths with sponsor signage will be displayed on light poles lining the Olde Village section of East Montague Avenue in
October & November.

Wreath sponsorship requests should be made by 5:00pm on Friday, September 20. Wreaths should be decorated and ready to hang by Tuesday, October 1.

Enjoy ghost stories by the Backporch Storytellers and kid’s activities at the Meeting Place (1077 East Montague Ave.) from 6-8pm, an artist street market featuring booths by members of the North Charleston Artist Guild from 6-9pm, live music, costume contests for children and adults, ongoing spooky silent films, and a street dance featuring festive tunes by the V-Tones from 8-10pm. Co-sponsored by the Olde North Charleston Merchants Association, the North Charleston Artist Guild, and the City of North Charleston. Autumn treats will be available for purchase. The Special Events section of our website will be updated with details and complete event schedule in mid-October. North Charleston City Gallery to Exhibit Works by

The South Carolina Watermedia Society

36th annual juried exhibit features works by some of SC’s best artists

 

 

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that works by The South Carolina Watermedia Society will be on exhibit at the North Charleston City Gallery from September 2-30, 2013. The collection of works, on loan through the South Carolina State Museum’s Traveling Exhibitions Program, features the top 30 pieces from the group’s 36th annual juried exhibition. Selections were made by world renowned watercolorist, Linda Baker. A number of the works on view will be available for purchase, including the exhibit’s Best of Show, a watercolor piece titled Taking a Break by Beaufort, SC, artist Audrey Montgomery.

 

The South Carolina Watermedia Society is the only statewide visual arts organization in South Carolina to promote artists who work in watermedia, which includes watercolor, acrylic, gouache and casein, among others. As the state’s largest visual arts guild, their membership includes some of South Carolina’s best artists. Their annual juried exhibition, which has been presented since 1977, offers both new and established artists from around the state the opportunity to compete for prize money and to have their work exhibited in a variety of venues under the supervision of the South Carolina State Museum’s Traveling Exhibitions Program. The North Charleston City Gallery is situated in the common areas of the Charleston Area Convention Center, located at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston.
